Buff Orpington chickens have been one of the most popular breeds for years at McMurray Hatchery. This gentle breed is perfect for families wanting backyard chickens and fresh eggs in an urban setting. Orpingtons are a dual-purpose breed — known for superior egg-laying while retaining meat quality — making them a great option for homesteaders and small farmers, too.
Buff Orpingtons were originally developed in England in the late 1800’s by crossing Minorcas, Langshans and Plymouth Rocks. They quickly became popular when they were introduced in the United States. Orpingtons come in a variety of colors, but the golden ‘Buff’ is the most common.
These large, stately chickens have glistening golden feathers and a wonderfully quiet disposition. Their loose, fluffy feathers keep them warm in colder weather. Orpingtons have a single comb and pinkish white beaks, shanks and toes. Baby Buff Orpington chicks are a soft, light buff color.
Hens lay large brown eggs — even right through colder weather. They also also make excellent setters and mothers to their baby chicks. Broody Buff Orpington hens are often willing to hatch others’ eggs or accept other baby chicks as their own.
McMurray Hatchery sells female, male and straight-run day-old Buff Orpington baby chicks from January through October. Visit our website or call 800-456-3280 for current availability and pricing.
