Black Indian Runner Ducks
The Black Runner Duck is the slick, black variant of the Indian Runner Family. Black Indian Runner ducks have an active disposition, almost always scouring the earth for bugs and pests. The Chinese have used Indian Runner ducks in the rice fields as pest control against slugs, snails and other bugs for hundreds of years.
While the Black Runner is energetic, it is not capable of prolonged flight. They have a very strong flock mentality, which can sometimes cause larger groups of Black Runner ducks to act in a frenzied manner if they are startled. This provides for an entertaining yet sensitive and also emotional pet.
Like other Runner hens, the Black Runner hen can compete with the most effective egg laying hens, yielding between 100 and 300 eggs per year.
For show purposes, the Black Runner duck should not be too large, and should have strong legs and a smooth running stride. The Black Runner duck may develop white aging feathers like any other black duck. This entertaining and energetic animal is a very useful addition to a flock.
