A gorgeous, rare and elegant chicken. As the name implies, this variety is notable for the red feathering in the shoulder area, mixed in with pure white plumage. These fancy ornamental chickens have an upright carriage and pheasant-like body. Roosters are noted for their extremely long saddle feathers and tail feathers which is the primary emphasis for exhibitors of this chicken breed. With proper care their tails can grow up to 2-3 feet every year. In fact their ancestors in Japan are said to produce tails as long as 27 feet! They’re indifferent layers and will go broody after laying only their first dozen eggs. The Red Shouldered Yokohama and the White varieties were admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1981. This rare breed chicken was originally developed in Japan and Cackle Hatchery has been the main breeder in the USA since 1977. Their beautiful and striking presence makes them perfect for show competition.
