Blue Swedish Ducks

The Blue Swedish ducks are the perfect backyard breed. They make friendly pets and are decent egg and meat birds, as well as active foragers.

Description

The Blue Swedish Ducks are a large and attractive domestic duck breed that is similar in size to the Rouen. The blue coloration is a rarer coloration in any domestic poultry, and it is much more difficult to breed for. The blue often appears to be a slate or gray color, but the hues do differ.

Duck breeds similar to the Blue Swedish were bred in Europe for hundreds of years. It is thought that the first Blue Swedish ducks were raised in Pomerania, part of the Swedish kingdom around 1835.

These birds make great pets because they have a calm disposition along with their typically social behaviors. They are average layers of fresh duck eggs, and they are very aesthetically appealing in a large flock with their slate blue coloration and white bibs. Like many other breeds of domestic ducks, Blue Swedish Ducks can make an excellent garden pet as they are active foragers. They will rid your garden or lawn of harmful insects.

Breeding the Blue Swedish Ducks can be challenging because blue feathered fowl do not breed true to color. When breeding a Blue Swedish male with a Blue Swedish female, you will get 50% blue, 25%, black (Black Swedish), and 25% light grey called Silver or Splash colored.
