Green Eggs

Olive Egger: The Chicken That Lays Green Eggs

You’ve seen white eggs. You’ve seen brown eggs. But if you want to add some color to your organic eggs at the farmers market or simply to your egg basket, there’s no more unique way than with green eggs!

The Olive Egger is a type of Easter Egger that, unlike the latter, will always lay green eggs. The exact shade depends on the type of Olive Egger you have. What do we mean by that?

The best of both worlds

The Olive Egger isn’t a pure breed. It’s the name of a chicken that’s the product of crossing a dark shell layer breed with a blue shell layer breed.

The favorite brown-shell layer breeds are usually Marans, Welsummers, Barnevelders and Pendesencas. These are chosen because they lay a very dark brown shell egg and are also good layers.

For the blue-shell layers, as you may know, there aren’t a lot of options. They’re typically and Ameraucana, an Araucana (they’re not the same!) or an Easter Egger.

Depending on the breeds selected to cross them, the Olive Egger will lay eggs with a shell ranging from light green to deep army green.

A famous favorite

If you’re looking to make money with your chickens, adding some green eggs will definitely make your basket more appealing. Most people have never even seen natural green eggs! There’s no easier way to make sure that your clients know this isn’t their supermarket half-a-dozen of eggs than with eggs that look like nothing they’ve seen before. And they won’t be the only ones.

The Olive Egger is becoming quite popular in Silicon Valley. As we mention before, the rarest eggs can become a perfect status symbol gift. Martha Stewart famously got Olive Eggers for her personal farm too!

Where to get them

Due to their popularity, Olive Eggers can become quite hard to get. Although most hatcheries carry them they get quickly out of stock. If you’re looking for them or any other breed, make sure they come from a reputable source that will ship them to you with care so the chicks will arrive safely and healthy.

Luckily we have the best place for you! You can get baby Easter Egger chicks right here. Once you do, don’t forget to send us the photos of your beautiful green eggs!
