Buff Orpington: 5 Reasons To Love Them

We’ve mentioned before how Buff Orpingtons are actually one of our favorite breeds! With a sweet and gentle disposition, these large and fluffy chickens are beloved by beginners and experts alike!

Here are some of the reasons why you should add a Buff Orpington to your flock, or maybe even have a full flock of them!

Perfect for kids

If you’re looking for a chicken pet that everyone in the family can love, Buff Orpingtons are the way to go. They’re friendly, cuddly and calm, even with small children! Orpingtons are curious and will be your little kid’s sidekick while exploring the yard.

They’re so gentle in fact that, despite their size, they can be picked on by other breeds so make sure to keep an eye on them and never have them in the same flock as more aggressive and territorial birds like Sumatras.

Good egg layer

Unlike Silkies, Orpingtons will lay you eggs that are larger and more frequent. Some Orpingtons can lay up to 300 yearly large eggs, however you can expect at least around 250 from them.

Now true, there are some chickens that will lay more eggs for you. However none of them will be as gentle and friendly as a Buff Orpington!

Amazing mothers

The only thing undercutting their laying capabilities is their tendency to go broody. However this is perfect for anyone looking to get a self-sustainable flock!

Buff Orpingtons excel at motherly instincts, usually making them the default mother in any flock. Unlike some other distracted breeds, Orpingtons make amazing mothers, sitting patiently on eggs and vigilantly raising chicks that aren’t even theirs. If you want to naturally expand your flock, there’s no easier way to do it than with an Orpington.

A royal pet

Their origin is perfect for anyone looking for a breed with some history behind it. They originated in the late 1800s, when William Cook, a coachman from Orpington town, in Kent, England, unveil the Black Orpington, becoming an overnight sensation.

People loved their black feathers because the color would hide the cities’ dirt, however, the Buff, Splash, White and Blue versions were bred soon after. Nowadays you can even get Lavander Orpingtons!

Buff Orpingtons quickly became the most popular variety, so popular in fact that they famously became the Queen Mother’s favorite breed! And if it’s good enough for a Queen, it’s good enough for us.

Quiet and easy to take care of

City dwellers will be happy to know that these girls can keep it quiet. They also adapt to confinement quite well! And those fluffy feathers aren’t just for show. They protect them from harsh winters, making them a very hardy bird. In fact their reliability is one of the reasons why British farmers loved them so much!

With their gentle personalities, their hardiness and their laying capabilities, Buff Orpingtons are truly one of the most versatile breeds that will be a perfect fit for practically anyone! Get the regular sized birds or the bantam version now!
