We all have our favorite home remedies for ourselves. Why not for our birds? In a small flock a viral disease can be devastating, so you have to know what to do and act quickly to fight it. Preventive remedies are also very important to keep your flock healthy. Below we have our top five homemade remedies for poultry, in no particular order.

Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar isn’t just great for humans. Adding a teaspoon of vinegar to their water supply twice a week can eliminate internal parasites, act as a tonic and help calcium absorption. It can help to keep your chickens healthy as well as increasing the eggs’ hardiness. White vinegar can also be applied to minor wounds since it helps with the bleeding. Be careful as to not overfeed them vinegar as prolonged acidity in the water isn’t good for them.

Parsley

A chicken favorite that’s also a great remedy for their health. Think of it as your birds’ multivitamin. Packed with vitamin A, B, C, E, K, calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium and zinc, it may become one of your favorites too! In chickens it also helps stimulate egg-laying. Birds love to eat the steams and leaves, which are better when air-dried. It’s very cheap and easy to grow in your garden.

Cayenne pepper

A very old secret ingredient to chicken and duck feed, adding pepper has been known to boos egg production. It can also help with worm diseases and other parasites since it burns them in the digestive system. Add a teaspoon to their feed as an easy remedy to deworm your flock!

Oregano

We’ve talked about the dangers of salmonella in the past. This natural antibiotic not only helps prevent salmonella, it also helps prevent and fight E. coli, coccidiosis, avian flu and infectious bronchitis, as well as treating parasites and preventing reinfection. It’s a great immune system booster and you can give it to your birds as a treat. Simply add it to their feed, give it to them as a snack or add dried oregano to their water. Like parsley it’s also very cheap and easy to grow in your garden.

Ginger

Ginger is a great home remedy for a flock that is losing their appetite. It also has anti-oxidant and stress.reducing properties. Since it helps stimulate blood flow, this root is particularly essential for your winter prep! It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. To use it simply add some dried ginger to their feed, which can also promote the production of larger eggs.

Bonus remedy: Garlic

More and more studies have positioned garlic as an up-and-comer remedy. As it turns out, not only is it great for humans, it’s also great for their birds.

Since it’s high in sulfur it’s toxic to most of the parasites that plague your flock, such as ticks, lice and mites. It’s also such a strong natural antibiotic that Russians refer to it as the “Russian Penicillin” and it helps prevent and fight respiratory diseases and other common diseases in birds. It’s also very safe for your flock since, unlike man made antibiotics, garlic only kills the harmful bacteria and not the “good” bacteria in their systems. You may even notice a decreased stench of manure if feeding them garlic regularly! To give garlic to your flock just sprinkle a teaspoon or two of garlic powder to their feed. You can also add a couple of full cloves to float on their water.

    I also use finely milled corn meal as well as ACV to the water during the first few weeks of my chicks lives. I rarely have a case of “poopy butt” and the chicks love the additives!
