The Black Indian Runner Ducks are the slick, black variant of the Indian Runner Family. The Black Indian Runner duck has an active disposition, almost always scouring the earth for bugs and pests. The Chinese have used Indian Runner ducks in rice fields against slugs, snails and other bugs for hundreds of years.
While the Black Runner is energetic, it is not capable of prolonged flight. They have a strong flock mentality, which can cause groups of runners to act in a frenzied manner if startled. This provides for an entertaining yet sensitive and emotional pet.
Like other Runner hens, the Black Runner hen can compete with the most effective egg laying hens, yielding between 100 and 300 eggs per year. You can check out these other popular standard breeds of runner ducks, too: Blue, Fawn and White, and Chocolate Indian Runner Ducks.
For show purposes, the Black Runner duck should not be too large, but should have strong legs and a smooth running stride. The Black Runner duck may develop white aging feathers like any other black duck. This entertaining and energetic animal is very useful addition to a flock and an exotic and unique pet.
