India Blue Peafowl
India Blue Peafowl are by far the most common and popular peafowl variety in the United States. Native to India and Pakistan, Indian Blue Peafowl are raised in other parts of the world for their aesthetic appeal and their ability to raise alarm and ward off predators or other threats to their surrounding habitat.
The male Peafowl, most commonly referred to as the Peacock, is most popular for its iridescence and its tail feathers, or train that the bird flaunts for mating or defensive purposes. The males generally do not fully mature until age three, but the Peacock's fascinating plumage upon full maturation does not fall short of it's reputable prestige.
The less brilliant India Blue Peahens are easily differentiated from the Peacocks; they lack the colorful train and the majority of their top and rear feathers are light brown. The Peacock will mate with up to six different Peahens during a breeding season usually occurring during the early summer months. A Peahen will usually lay a clutch of four to six eggs with an incubation period of about twenty eight days. |
