Brown Chinese Geese
The Brown Chinese Goose is the smallest, yet probably most practical of common domestic geese. The breed are also known as Swan Geese because of their graceful posture and smoothly curved neck.
The Brown Chinese Geese are an extremely versatile breed; laying up to 100 eggs per year they yield the highest quantity of white eggs of all other domestic geese. They are easy to sex upon maturity due to the differing sizes of the knob atop their slender black beaks, the gander's being noticeably larger. The ratio for breeding the Chinese Geese should be approximately 4 to 6 geese per gander rather than the usual one to one mating ratio.
Along with a long, slender beak, Chinese Geese have short, compact bodies with broad, smoothly rounded chests. The Brown Chinese variety are mostly a deep brown color with a creamy white chest and abdomen. A dark brown stripe runs down the top of the elegantly curved neck into the dark brown, nearly black plumage on the birds back.
Because Chinese Geese are small and such good foragers, they are easier to tend to and require much less food than a less active breed. This elegant, swan like bird can be raised for meat along with its other many useful qualities and is an excellent addition to any practical goose owner's flock. |
