Mallard Runner Ducklings
The Mallard Runner Duck is a standard variety of the Indian Runner duck breeds. Their overall coloring similar to a traditional Mallard Ducks, but possessing the same upright carriage of other Runner duck breeds. Also known as the Gray Runner duck, the Mallard Runner duck is not a large breed, but stands tall and upright in stature with a long straight neck and flat head.
Indian Runner ducks in general are a bit temperamental and even frantic at times. They are easily startled, and their flocking mentality can cause quite a stir if they are in a larger group. This can make for an entertaining, sensitive, and unique pet in many situations.
Like other Runners, the Mallard Runner ducklings are bred primarily as egg layers. Mallard Runners may even lay up to 365 eggs per year if they lay an egg a day. They are not commonly bred as meat ducks because of their small stature.
The Gray or Mallard Runner duck is generally not preferred to be too large.. Their strong legs and smooth running stride make them a desired show bird, and their superb foraging abilities establish this breed as an excellent pest controller. Mallard Runner Ducks are great pets to have around the farm or in the garden. |
