- Why a walk-in chicken coop?
The Garden Coop was designed not only with chickens and other fowl in mind, but the people who keep them as well. One of the most important elements of a chicken coop is giving the birds' human caretakers easy access for cleaning, changing food and water, maintenance, and interaction. You don't want these fundamentals of chicken ownership to become a hassle for you. The extra height also gives chickens a chance to roost up high, which they naturally like to do.
- This coop looks open and airy? Will it work for the winters in my part of the country?
One of the key success factors of a chicken coop is adequate ventilation, which discourages mold and potential disease by eliminating moisture. This coop design is quite ventilated, making for a safe chicken environment. For the harsh winter months, this coop offers an elevated and insulated hen house which will serve to provide warmth when it is necessary. While most egg laying chicken breeds are very cold hardy and will do just fine in the winter months, this coop does provide a shelter where the birds can bed down and keep warm. Finally, the panels of the hen house are double walled, meaning you can add or remove insulation when necessary.
- How predator-proof is the design?
Very. While the predators that can threaten your flock and its resources will vary by region, the sides and roof area of The Garden Coop are totally enclosed in hardware cloth. The plans detail a couple of options for installing hardware cloth to prevent burrowing predators as well.
As for raccoons, the predator proof design comes with a unique swiveling latch which will keep these ingenious bandits out. While rodents will go after chicken feed, raccoons will go after your chickens. Rest assured the "The Garden Coop" design is virtually impenetrable to for raccoons and rodents, and most likely whatever other local predator you may encounter.

Cleaning this chicken coop is quite simple given the ability for an adult to gain access to the coop and stand upright. Simply rake the used bedding into the open chicken run and remove it. It is quite simple. To maintain the yard or run area of the chicken coop, you can simply add in new bedding every week or so, then remove the bedding every 1-2 months. This will offer you valuable compost, as well as a simple and economical method of raising chickens.
