Cape Shelduck Pairs
The
Cape Shelduck, also know as the
South African Shelduck is a species of
Shelduck native to South Africa. The
Cape Shelduck is a strikingly distinct and beautiful duck breed that is found most often in open country close to lakes and rivers. Like many other breeds of
Shelduck, this particular duck species likes to nest in abandoned mammal holes or hollowed out stumps. In their endemic habitat in South Africa, they are often found dabbling in shallow lakes and riverbanks.
The drake
Cape Shelduck has a gray head and neck with a buff chest. The rest of the body is colored quite similarly to the
Ruddy Shelduck with a red chestnut body. The hens are quite similar in body color, but their splotchy white faces and darker brown heads distinctly set them apart from their male counterparts. This is a medium to large breed of duck and is often described as goose-like in stature, especially while in flight. Because of it's close similarities in color and disposition, many bird specialists believe the
Cape Shelduck to be a subspecies of the
Ruddy Shelduck.
Also like the
Ruddy Shelduck, this breed is not social with other duck breeds and can be aggressive around smaller ducks, especially during mating season. It is recommended to keep them in a separate living environment for the well being of all parties. Because they normally nest in used animal holes, it is best to use some kind of buried stump or log with a hole to use as nesting.
