Buff Orpington Chickens
Buff Orpington Chickens are a beautiful and popular chicken breed for their dual-purpose utility and overall pleasant demeanor. The Orpington breed is particularly known for its hardiness during the winter months, continually laying eggs in cold weather. This plump, white skinned bird also dresses extremely well and yields fair amounts of tender juicy meat.
These birds are moderately early maturing and will begin to lay medium to large brown eggs around 24 weeks. A great thing about Buff Orpingtons is that they easily adapt to many different environments. They may be raised as free range chickens and are also very adaptable to confinement due to their docile temperament. Orpingtons are known to be quite friendly and will make pleasant pets in addition to their typical farm functionality, but when exposed to other breeds of chicken they do tend to be bullied.
Buff Orpington Chickens are typically excellent mothers and frequent brooders. They have full fluffy feathers that help them stay comfortable and continue to lay all winter. Their beautiful buff colored plumage and large stately form is an attraction to many chicken breeders interested in showing their birds. Their attractive appearance and hardy nature make the Buff Orpington an excellent dual-purpose breed for the farm or the backyard.
