Buckeye Chicken

The Buckeye Chicken is quite similar to the Rhode Island Red, and was developed in Ohio by a breeder by the name of Mrs. Nettie Metcalf around the same time the Rhode Island Red was developed in New England. Originally named the Pea Combed Rhode Island Red, this chicken is a dark mahogany colored bird with a pea comb and is very adaptable and winter hardy. The breed was developed with the bloodlines of the Black Breasted Red Game Fowl, the Buff Cochin Chicken, and Barred Plymouth Rock Chickens.

The Buckeye Chicken is a hardy dual purpose breed that is good meat bird with meaty thighs, and the hens are good producers of medium sized brown eggs. It's small pea comb and active disposition are excellent traits that make this a great cold hardy bird. Because it is so active, it will be much more comfortable in a free range environment where it has plenty of room to roam and forage. It is a friendly breed that is usually very keen on human interaction.
