Barnacle Geese Pairs

Barnacle Geese are an interesting goose species that reside mostly on Arctic Island of the North Atlantic Ocean. There are multiple separate populations of geese along the coasts of Greenland, Norway, Svalbard, and Novaya Zemlya. Each of these populations will winter on different European coastlines as well. Rarely are they seen in the United States and no breeding populations have ever been recorded in the US.

The Barnacle Goose is a medium sized goose with mostly white and black plumage. It is part of the Brante genus consisting of geese that have primarily black plumage. The face of the Barnacle Goose is white, surrounded by a black head, neck and breast. The underbelly, rear and covert plumage is all white and contrasts sharply with the black plumage of the chest and tail. The feathers on the back can be quite striking in the sun when the silvery gray feathers shine with light reflection. The back is also barred with black and white plumage as well.

The Barnacle Geese most frequently nest on high rocky cliffs so as to avoid predators like the Arctic Fox and the Polar Bear, but their methods for feeding and rearing their young are not so evasive. The young are usually dropped from down from the rocky cliffs around 3 years of age where some of them are saved by their light weight and fluffy down coat. Many often die from the impact and others are injured and left for the Arctic Fox. Barnacle Geese are not fed by the adults, but must follow them to the grassy areas near river estuaries, salt marshes, or tidal mud flats to feed-leaving them quite exposed to predators.

The Barnacle Goose is quite popular among fowl collectors because of its distinctive plumage. The females will usually lay 4-6 eggs per clutch,
