Ancona Chicken
The Ancona Chicken is closely related to the Leghorn Chicken Breed, and originated in Eastern Italy near it's namesake, the port of Ancona. Like the Leghorn Chicken, Ancona Chickens are excellent layer of large white eggs, laying between 160 and 180 eggs per year.
The Ancona Chicken is a small and active chicken that stays very alert. The breed has black plumage with many v shaped white feathers as well, and the black tail has a beetle green iridescent sheen. The Ancona Chicken was first shown in England in 1851 and was brought to America around 1888 where it became popular for it's white egg laying abilities.
The Ancona Chickens are known as good foragers, and the hens are non-brooders, laying abundant large white eggs. The cocks usually weigh around 6 pounds and the hens around 4.5 pounds. Their shape, size and stature are similar to it's Leghorn cousin. |
